Let’s Get Started!
Actress and comedian Amy Schumer is responding to remarks about her appearance by urging people to shift their focus to her work and to learn more about a common women’s health issue.
In an Instagram post on Thursday, Amy Schumer, 42, promoted the premiere of the second season of her Hulu series, “Life & Beth,” which she not only stars in but also writes, directs, and executive-produces.
“Thank you so much for everyone`s input about my face!” Amy Schumer, sarcastically kicked off her post, acknowledging the ongoing scrutiny women face about their looks. “I`ve enjoyed feedback and deliberation about my appearance as all women do for almost 20 years. And you`re right, it is puffier than normal right now”
Amy Schumer then went on to reveal that she’s dealing with “some medical and hormonal issues” related to endometriosis, a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of it, affecting areas like the fallopian tubes, ovaries, bladder, and intestines.
What Did Amy Schumer Have To Say About Endometriosis?
Amy Schumer said, “I have endometriosis, an autoimmune disease that every woman should read about. There are some medical and hormonal things going on in my world right now but I’m okay. Historically, women’s bodies have barely been studied medically compared to men. The book ‘all in her head’ does a good job explaining this.”
“I also believe a woman doesn’t need any excuse for her physical appearance and owes no explanation. But I wanted to take the opportunity to advocate for self-love and acceptance of the skin you’re in. Like every other woman/person, some days I feel confident and good as hell and others I want to put a bag over my head. But I feel strong and beautiful and so proud of this TV show I created. Wrote. Starred in and directed. Maybe just maybe we can focus on that for a little. I had backup dancers on Fallon but my face is the headline hahaha anyway I hope you enjoy life and Beth. Love and solidarity,” Amy Schumer added.
The ‘Trainwreck’ star revealed in a sincere Instagram video from September 2021 that she had her uterus and appendix removed due to endometriosis, as reported by People. “So, it’s the morning after my surgery for endometriosis and my uterus is out. The doctor found 30 spots of endometriosis that he removed. He removed my appendix because the endometriosis had attacked it. There was a lot, a lot of blood in my uterus and I’m, you know, sore and I have some, like, gas pains,” said Schumer. During an appearance on The Checkup with Dr. David Agus in December 2022, Amy Schumer stated that she felt “like a new person” after the treatment.
What Is Endometriosis?
The World Health Organization explains that endometriosis is when tissue similar to the uterus lining grows outside the uterus. This can cause strong pelvic pain and difficulties with pregnancy.
Endometriosis can begin with a person’s first period and last until menopause. Its cause is not known, and there’s no sure way to prevent it. While there’s no cure, medications or sometimes surgery can help manage its symptoms.
Taking to Instagram, Amy Schumer urged women to educate themselves about endometriosis, labeling it a vital topic.
Despite affecting one in ten women of reproductive age in the U.S., endometriosis often remains undiagnosed for years due to its diverse symptoms and lack of awareness, as noted by experts at ACOG.
According to Dr. Tamer Seckin, an endometriosis surgeon, endometriosis often starts with tiny lesions on the abdominal lining called “peritoneal endometriosis.” These lesions, sometimes too small to be seen on tests like ultrasounds, can be as tiny as millimeters.
EndoFound reports that many women wait up to 10 years before getting a diagnosis for endometriosis. Although it’s typically diagnosed in women in their 30s and 40s, adolescents can also be affected, says ACOG.
Let’s Wrap Up!
While discussing endometriosis, Schumer shared on Instagram her desire for people, especially women, to accept and embrace their bodies.
She stressed that women shouldn’t have to explain or justify their appearance. Schumer advocated for self-love and being comfortable in one’s own skin.
She acknowledged that like everyone else, she has good and bad days regarding confidence. Despite this, Schumer feels proud of her accomplishments, particularly her involvement in creating, writing, starring in, and directing a TV show. She suggested shifting focus to these achievements rather than dwelling on physical appearance.
